Safe water is a basic human right, yet 2.2 billion people still live without it. The world has the technology, but not the will – yet. WaterStep is here to change that. We’re uniting the 6 billion who have safe water to help the 2.2 billion who don’t. Let’s make this the greatest success story in history. WaterStep is an NGO based in Kentucky that focuses on sustainable solutions to the world’s Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) crisis. Since 1995, WaterStep has evolved from a small service organization to a global leader in safe water solutions and innovation.
WaterStep has developed simple tools, patented technology, and effective training to empower people and communities to solve their own water and sanitation needs. We provide expert solutions for places where infrastructure is fragile and execution challenges are particularly difficult, especially in slums, rural villages, and in communities responding to natural and human made disasters. WaterStep combines safe water and disinfectant technology, and health and hygiene education because safe water in a dirty cup is no longer safe, and dirty hands spread disease. Our technology offers scalable safe water and disinfectant access during disasters because no one should have to worry about whether their water is safe during an emergency. No other safe water NGO in the world does what we do.
Since our 1995 inception we have served 72 countries, impacting more than 15 million lives. We’ve empowered thousands of communities with our simple, sustainable, and scalable solutions. We respond to disasters worldwide, including hurricanes, earthquakes, tornadoes.

BleachMaker: PATENTED – WaterStep’s BleachMaker makes a bleach solution to be used as a general-purpose disinfectant. The production of a strong, effective disinfectant made on-site, easily and at a low cost, will promote improved sanitation and hygiene. It is portable and uses only water, salt, and a 12V/DC power source. It generates approx. 1 gallon of bleach (5 liters) every hour. The bleach, if sealed in a container, has a 2-week shelf life. Also, bleach is a proven disinfectant for water. A small quantity of bleach can be added to a container of water, and after waiting 30 minutes, the water can safely be consumed. Dimensions: 20′′x15′′x6′′ / Weight: approx. 7 lbs.
EXP-50 Portable Hand Drilling System: The EXPLORER Hand Drilling System (EXP-50) is used around the world to drill water wells by hand without bulky engines, mud pumps or costly machinery. Components can be repaired or replaced using parts that are accessible in most developing countries. Drilling depth capability varies depending on the specific geological conditions. The EXP-50 is recommended for shallow well drilling of up to 50 ft. (15.2 m) and is not designed to drill through hard rock. The user is responsible for complying with all local and international laws regarding well drilling. Engineered to be a “go anywhere” tool to check as baggage on most airlines. The entire drill can be backpacked to just about any location without having to worry about vehicle accessibility. As packaged, the EXP-50 can be used to drill a 5-inch hole, 50 ft. (16 m) deep. If greater depth is required, additional extension rods (EXP-50) may be purchased directly from WaterStep, or may be manufactured in the field. The EXP-50 comes with (1) EXP-01 Regular auger bit, (1) EXP-02 Sand auger bit, (1) EXP-03 Cracking bit, (1) EXP-04 T-Handle, (1) EXP-07 Multi-slip, (2) EXP-13 Carrying bag, (16) EXP-05 Extension rod, and (25) EXP-06 Lock pin.
