Come to Montgomery for an immersive journey through American history and visit the Legacy Sites, including the Legacy Museum, National Memorial, Freedom Monument, and Montgomery Square.  On the site of a cotton warehouse where enslaved Black people were forced to labor in bondage, the Legacy Museum tells the story of slavery in America and its legacy through interactive media, first-person narratives, world-class art, and data-rich exhibits.

Our venues were thoughtfully created as an enhancement of the Legacy Sites experience, providing opportunities for groups, organizations, educators, businesses, and community partners to gather in spaces that encourage dialogue, engagement, reflection and learning.

We can help you optimize your itinerary to ensure the right amount of time at each site, identify meeting spaces and catering options, and provide background materials suited to your group. Simply call us, send us an email, or complete the Group Reservations form online.

The Equal Justice Initiative, the nonprofit organization behind the Legacy Sites, has added lodging and additional event spaces for visitors. The Elevation Convening Center and Hotel opened in October 2025 and is designed to complement the Legacy Sites experience. A stay at Elevation extends the journey of learning about the history of our nation while providing visitors with a serene environment to decompress and engage meaningfully with often overlooked narratives. It is a transformative space for reflection, education, and connection in downtown Montgomery. This property offers boardrooms seating 12-16, meeting rooms for 30-80 guests, and a ballroom that can accommodate 200.

As an EATERY: Food for thought…

Pannie-George’s Kitchen is conveniently located in The Legacy Museum. We offer a southern style meat and vegetable cuisine. Each day we vary our meat and vegetable selection to provide our customers with an array of choices. Fried chicken is the lone exception, due to its great taste, and overwhelming popularity.

Located on the first floor of Elevation Convening Center and Hotel, Elevation Café is your place for snacks, beverages, and light bites. 

AYA, also at the Elevation Convening Center and Hotel, is located steps from the Legacy Sites and overlooking the Montgomery skyline. AYA is where warmth and reverence meet bold, soulful flavor. Our purpose is simple: to feed more than just your appetite—to stir your memory, awaken your senses, and invite you into community. Our menu draws from 400 years of culinary history in the United States, highlighting the roots of Black Southern cuisine and its West African origins, with a particular nod to Ghana. Many ingredients used in today’s Southern staples trace back to seeds carried through the Middle Passage, braided into the hair of enslaved women and men. At AYA, we honor those stories with care and sophistication.

As a nonprofit law office founded by Bryan Stevenson in 1989, the Equal Justice Initiative (EJI) represents clients sentenced to death and condemned to die in prison, challenges inhumane conditions of confinement, and works to expose racial bias in the criminal legal system. Seeing firsthand how excessive punishment, racial discrimination, and inequality are deeply rooted in America’s history of racial injustice inspired us to create the Legacy Museum and related sites. By offering these unique spaces for people to gather, learn, and reflect on our history and its legacy, we hope to foster a new era of truth and justice in America.

Your contribution is critical to our efforts to end mass incarceration and excessive punishment, challenge racial and economic injustice, and protect basic human rights for the most vulnerable.  Thank you!

EJI is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization and all donations are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law and do not represent payment for goods or services received.  EJI devotes over 94% of expenses to core program services.

Donation

The easiest way to support The Legacy Museum is by making an online gift to the Equal Justice Initiative. You may donate via debit or credit card, bank transfer, PayPal, Apple Pay, Google Pay, or Microsoft Pay. Donations at specified amounts are designated or you may customize your gifts. You may donate on behalf of a business, organization, or in memory, honor, or tribute to a special person or occasion. Recurring gifts are greatly appreciated. 

To make a donation by check, please mail a check made out to “Equal Justice Initiative” to our address at 122 Commerce Street, Montgomery, Alabama, 36104. Please include your email address and full mailing address so that we may send you a thank you and donation receipt. Optionally, you may download a donation form from our site to include with your gift.

Gift Matching Program

If you or one of your family members works for an organization with a matching gift program, you can double or even triple the impact of your donation. Please contact a member of our Development Team before making a stock donation. Please ensure that your brokerage shares your full name, mailing address, email address, and the stock name and number of shares donated so that we may process and acknowledge your gift. EJI only accepts donations of publicly traded marketable securities.

Retirement Account Distributions

Contact your IRA administrator to determine if you qualify. If so, you should instruct your administrator to transfer funds to EJI (Tax ID: 63-1135091). Help us credit your gift and thank you by having your IRA administrator include your full name and mailing address on the gift, and have your administrator note that the transfer is an IRA Qualified Charitable Distribution.

Advocate for the Cause

You can help the Equal Justice Initiative by learning about our work, being a steward of American history, and spreading the word about this cause in your local community. 

• Social media: Join us now in our efforts to challenge racial injustice by sharing, retweeting, and regramming our posts.
• Sign up for our daily emails: We believe our nation must reckon with our history of racial inequality to move forward. A History of Racial Injustice is one way to learn more about American history. The online calendar features a different event every day which will be emailed – perfect for sharing!
• Host an educational event: Bring your community together to learn, share, and discuss America’s broken criminal justice system. Start a book club or screen movies or documentaries to inform your neighbors.
• Address Racial Injustices in Your Community: Partner with us to confront your community’s history by collecting soil and installing markers at lynching sites through our Community Remembrance Project.
• Support Your Local Organizations: You can help by volunteering to support someone returning to your community. Contribute your individual skills and passion to a re-entry or criminal justice reform organization in your community.
• Vote and Support Criminal Justice Reform: Find out where your elected prosecutors, sheriffs, and judges stand on criminal justice reforms and be sure to exercise your right to vote.
