Your contribution helps our education and conservation programs promote wildlife diversity and inspire people to take conservation action. Our programs focus on the importance of using native plants in community landscapes and using best management practices on private lands. Nature serves our society in many ways so take a stand today! Offered are a variety of contribution suggestions. Giving in honor or memory of someone is possible.

Volunteer: Volunteer! It’s for the Birds! Strawberry Plains needs you. Become a volunteer and join our family. Offered are a variety of jobs which are detailed on the website.

  • Nursery/Greenhouse Assistant: Assist with nursery/greenhouse duties which include, watering during growing season (especially summer months), getting plants ready for Native Plant Sales, potting plants, and general upkeep. Native plant familiarity is helpful, but not necessary. Bending and lifting are required. Work is outside, so ability to handle heat and humidity is a must.
  • Native Garden Assistant: Weeding and watering garden areas, planting/re-planting areas. Native plant familiarity is helpful. Work is outside, so ability to handle heat and humidity is a must.
  • Maintain Hummingbird Feeders: Help maintain feeders during peak season: July-September.
  • Visitor Greeter/Guide: Welcome guests at the Visitors Center, give house tours, give directions, answer phones. (Saturday Shifts Needed–9:00-3:00) Training will be provided.
  • Camp Counselor: Assist outreach and education director with summer camps. Must be enthusiastic, must have a passion for working with children in an outdoor setting, and must have a tolerance for variable weather conditions. A background check is required. 3-4 volunteers needed weekly during the summer camp sessions (usually June). Training will be provided.
  • Interpretive Hike Leader: Assist with and lead family and adult hikes. Must be enthusiastic and have a passion for working with adults and children (if leading a family hike), ability to walk moderate distances over uneven terrain, and have basic knowledge of SPAC natural history or willingness to learn. Hikes are held the 2nd Saturdays of each month, March-November.
  • Bike Tour Guide: Lead bike tours. 2 volunteers needed. Must be enthusiastic, adherence to bike safety and trail ethics, knowledge of trail systems and distances, and must be capable of cycling 5+ miles on grass trails of variable terrain. Tours will be held on Saturday mornings/early afternoon 2-3 times per year as needed.
  • House Tour Guide: Lead tours of historic Davis House and surrounding gardens. Must be enthusiastic, must possess a strong historical understanding of the Davis House and Strawberry Plains or a willingness to learn, and must be comfortable working and leading small groups on tours.
  • Hummingbird Migration & Nature Celebration: Many volunteers needed!!! We need approximately 125 volunteers each day to mange the festival, which takes place every September on the weekend following Labor Day.
  • Event Crew: Help with fundraisers and other events–Set up, park, serve, clean up, etc…
  • Nesting Box Monitoring and Maintenance: Monitor and record nesting data and success during the breeding season for the the bluebirds, wood duck, and the Prothonotary Warbler. Training will be provided. General “handy man” skills and experience with use of ATV’s preferred. Position requires light to moderate physical activity.
  • Trails Steward: Periodically inspect trails and report to staff any issues that need attention. Perform necessary trail maintenance as instructed by SPAC staff. Training will be provided. General ‘handy man” skills and experience with use of ATV’s preferred. Position requires light to moderate physical activity.
  • Booth Representative: Promote SPAC at different events and festivals. Training will be provided. Some light lifting will be required to carry promotional material.
