  • Support School Programs: OMCA’s K-12 school programs prioritize access and inclusion for students in Title I schools. Much like OMCA’s exhibitions, program content is experiential and is designed to help our youngest visitors express themselves with confidence, develop empathy, and build their critical thinking skills so they can see themselves as change-makers in their communities.
  • Sponsor Public Programs: Public programs at OMCA center on social cohesion—or the notion that, when we believe our stories matter, when we feel we belong, and when we feel comfortable sharing our thoughts and hearing those of others, we build a stronger community and are more likely to want to work together to create a more vibrant future. OMCA creates family-friendly experiences through our annual community festivals, community partnership activities, and exhibition-related public programs.
  • Sponsor Exhibitions: OMCA exhibitions explore the big ideas that shape our lives here in California, shining a light on the untold and under-told stories of the people behind them – all with a distinctly Oakland point of view. Depending on the scale of the exhibition, your sponsorship support will be recognized in exhibition advertising which may include TV and radio spots, billboards, bus sides, BART/SFMTA ads, OMCA emails, social media promotions, website listings, and more.
  • Provide In-Kind Support: Want to contribute in a different way? Contact us and see if OMCA might benefit from a gift of your product and/or services. We love our in-kind supporters!

Volunteer: Becoming an OMCA volunteer is easy! Volunteering at OMCA gives you a chance to get more involved with the museum you love. We are always recruiting enthusiastic volunteers to assist with school groups, events, office work, and more. Volunteer Info Sessions are offered several times a year. During Info Sessions, we discuss the various types of volunteer opportunities available to you, as well as next steps for getting involved!

  • Ambassadors: OMCA Ambassadors help promote OMCA‘s mission by providing a friendly, welcoming face to all visitors. Through training sessions, events, and new friendships, they develop a rewarding personal relationship with the Museum.
  • Exhibit Guides: Experience the excitement of touring school groups with just a two to three month commitment. Meet new people with similar interests and become part of our museum family. Exhibit Guides are trained in a specific special exhibition or part of a gallery, including Days of the Dead, Gold Rush, or California Indians. Trainings are held periodically throughout the year depending on our need for guides.
  • Docents: Join OMCA‘s 250 Docents – volunteers in the Art, History, and Natural Sciences Galleries – who help visitors of all ages enjoy and appreciate California’s natural wonders and cultural riches. Experience the excitement that comes from a continuing education experience of field trips, lectures, and hands-on trainings. Make new friends with people who have similar interests, and become part of a great institution. Most of all, help to ignite a spark in a young person’s imagination and experience the excitement of inspiring visitors to make discoveries that bring new insights about life in our great state. Art, History, and Natural Sciences Docent training is offered on a rotating basis every few years.
