We’re Saving Places

The National Trust for Historic Preservation is a private nonprofit organization leading the movement to save places where our history happened. Old places are where our lives, memories, and stories began. They connect us to the past, anchor us to the present, and lead us into the future. These places inspire us to create a stronger nation, because they belong to all of us.

For more than 75 years, the National Trust for Historic Preservation has led the movement to save America’s historic places. A privately funded nonprofit organization * we work to save America’s historic sites * tell the full American story * build stronger communities, and * invest in preservation’s future.

Thanks to the passion and dedication of our advocates and supporters, we’re able to protect hundreds of places every year. Help us save places that matter—for ourselves, each other, and our future together.

National Trust Council ($10,000 and Above): Members of the National Trust Council hold America’s cultural heritage among their highest philanthropic priorities with an annual commitment of $10,000 or more to the National Trust for Historic Preservation. In addition to the full suite of benefits provided through our Chairman’s and President’s Circles, Council members forge rewarding lifelong friendships while enjoying exclusive benefits as part of our premier donor recognition society, including:

  • Opportunities to experience their support in action in communities across America through behind-the-scenes tours, invitation-only events, and the National Trust Council Travel Program;
  • Insider communications and updates from National Trust leadership on the latest news about National Trust programs and priorities;
  • Invitations to participate in webinars, presentations, and virtual gatherings with fellow Council members, as well as executives, experts, and senior staff from across the National Trust;

  • And recognition in National Trust publications and the annual Honor Roll of Donors.

Chairman’s Circle ($5,000-$9,999): Chairman’s Circle members demonstrate significant support for the National Trust’s extensive education and advocacy programs, technical services, and historic sites nationwide through annual unrestricted contributions of $5,000 or more. Planned Giving:

  • A Gift in Your Will or Trust: With as little as one sentence, you can make a gift in your will or trust that significantly impacts the efforts of the National Trust to preserve history. Whether you choose to give a set amount or a percentage of your estate, your support ensures we have the resources to save America’s historic places.
  • Charitable Gift Annuities: Feel confident that you have dependable income in your retirement years with a charitable gift annuity. This gift can provide you with regular payments and provide the National Trust the resources to help preserve historic places. You can also qualify for a variety of tax benefits, including a federal income tax charitable deduction when you itemize.
  • Retirement Plan Assets: Retirement plan assets are a great way to support the work at the National Trust because they not only help preservation efforts, but they also can provide tax relief for your loved ones. Consider leaving your loved ones less heavily taxed assets and leaving your retirement plan assets to the National Trust.
  • A Gift From Your IRA: If you are 70½ years old or older, you can take advantage of a simple way to give to the National Trust and receive tax benefits in return. You can give up to $100,000 from your IRA directly to a qualified charity without having to pay income taxes on the money.
  • Gifts of Real Estate: When you give us appreciated property you have held longer than one year, you qualify for a federal income tax charitable deduction. This eliminates capital gains tax. And you no longer have to deal with that property’s maintenance costs, property taxes or insurance.
  • Gifts of Stock or Mutual Funds: If you’re looking for a tax-smart way to save history, consider a gift of stock. When you give appreciated stock or mutual funds that you’ve owned for more than one year, you can avoid capital gains tax and receive a charitable income tax deduction when you itemize.
  • There are many other types of planned gifts that may fit your long-term goals and help secure the future for you and your family, as well as the National Trust. Learn about these gifts by contacting Gift Planning Team.
