Be a DONORShow that you care…

Thanks to the support of nearly 60,000 members and donors, the Japanese American National Museum has built a world-class institution, accredited by the American Association of Museums and an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution. Our supporters represent many different ethnic backgrounds and come from every state in America and 17 countries around the world. Membership dues provide critical funding which helps maintain our permanent collection, as well as plays a crucial role in supporting education programs and exhibitions accessed by thousands of visitors, supporters, and members across the world. These generous contributions sustain JANM’s collection of over 100,000 unique artifacts that preserve the story of Japanese Americans from a first-person perspective. Members allow JANM to create new and important exhibits for the future, and continue to share this rich legacy to future generations. Membership not only offers numerous benefits (including 10% off JANM Store purchases!), but also supports our mission to promote understanding and appreciation of America’s ethnic and cultural diversity by sharing the experiences of Japanese Americans. We invite you to become a new member, renew your membership, or share JANM with a friend or loved one by giving a gift membership today! Memberships at specified levels are offered: * Senior * Student * Individual * Family/Dual * Contributing * Supporting * Director’s Circle * President’s Circle, and * Chairman’s Circle.

Your Donations Matter. Donations to JANM help us continue our important work by supporting our educational and public programs, preservation of artifacts in our extensive collection, and daily operations. Contributions can be made directly to the museum or through a financial institution using the methods listed below. Gifts to the museum may also be made in honor or memory of a loved one. A gift in support of the Japanese American National Museum will ensure that the museum is able to continue its tradition of excellence in producing exhibitions, public programs, publications and educational materials to preserve, interpret, and share the experiences of Japanese Americans.

  • General Support: Contributions can be made directly to the museum. They may also be made in honor or memory of someone.
  • Children’s Courtyard Gifts: Permanently inscribe a child’s name on the courtyard just outside the Pavilion for $300.
  • Donor Wall Recognition Opportunities: Limited space remains for permanent recognition of individuals, families, or honorees for gifts of $5,000 and above.
  • Special Events: Attend our annual Gala Dinner or support JANM through the Lexus Opportunity Drawing and/or Bid for Education.
  • Planned Giving: Achieve your own financial objectives while making a gift to the Japanese American National Museum.
  • Giving from Your IRA: If you need to take your required minimum distribution (RMD) from your IRA, using some of it to make a charitable gift is a tax-smart choice.
  • Vehicle Donations: Donate your unwanted cars to the Japanese American National Museum. We will arrange to have your vehicle picked up whether it’s running or not. Automobiles, trucks, vans, RVs, and some boats are accepted. There is no cost to you, and the gift is 100% tax-deductible with proceeds directly supporting the museum.
  • Legacy Society: You are invited to join a very special group of donors. The Japanese American National Museum Legacy Society honors those persons who have arranged a future gift to the Museum. In doing so, they acknowledge the importance of the Museum in preserving the rich heritage and cultural identity of Japanese Americans.
    • Bequests: Bequests are the most popular type of deferred gift. You can include a gift in your original will or living trust or add one later by an amendment. The gift can be for a specific amount of money, specific piece of property, or a percentage of your estate. A bequest gift is very flexible and allows you to retain control over your assets should you need them during your lifetime.
    • Beneficiary Designation: You can designate the Museum as a beneficiary of: retirement assets (IRA, 401(k), and 403(b) plans), bank accounts, brokerage accounts, commercial annuities, and life insurance policies. You can leave a portion to the Museum or the entire balance, if you have otherwise provided for heirs. Because of income tax considerations, this is one of the most tax-wise ways you can make a gift.
    • Charitable Remainder Trust: A charitable trust is another way to make a gift and receive income for life. It is more flexible in nature than a gift annuity and can allow you to meet different personal goals. Your payments can be either fixed or variable in amount.
    • Retained Life Estate: You transfer ownership of your residence to the Museum but continue to live in it for the remainder of your lifetime. This enables you to make a major gift without a change in lifestyle, simplifies probate for your heirs, and saves taxes now.
    • Charitable Lead Trust: This trust arrangement allows you to make current gifts to the Museum while passing your assets along to heirs sometime in the future, often with greatly reduced estate and gift taxes. It can also be arranged so that the remaining trust principal returns to you at the end of the trust term.
  • Institutional Support: We work with corporations and foundations that align with our mission to support exhibitions, educational programming, public programs, and special events. Areas for support include Exhibitions, Educational Support, Annual Gala Fundraiser, and Public Programs.
  • Gifts of Stock & Securities: You can donate stocks and securities to the Japanese American National Museum. The gift value will be based on the average of the high and low price of the security on the transfer date.
  • Donor Advised Fund: You can recommend a gift to the Japanese American National Museum through your established donor advised funds (“DAFs”). Please note that membership dues at the Contributing level and up, as well as Annual Gala sponsorships and tickets are not 100% tax-deductible due to associated benefits, and cannot be paid using a donor advised fund.
  • Charitable Individual Retirement Account (IRA)/Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD): Qualified individuals ages 70 ½ and over can donate from their individual retirement accounts to the Japanese American National Museum without counting the transfers as income for federal tax purposes. Although the transfers will not qualify as a charitable tax deduction due to no tax incurred on the gift, it can still be counted toward the donor’s qualified minimum distribution.
  • Matching Gift/Payroll Deduction: By taking advantage of your employer’s matching gift or payroll deduction program, you can increase your contribution to JANM. Consult with your company’s human resources department to determine which matching gift or payroll deduction programs are available. Please provide us with any gift verification form by mail or electronically to process.

Young Professionals Network: The Young Professionals Network (YPN) is a social and business association of young professionals that supports the Japanese American National Museum (JANM) and its mission to promote understanding and appreciation of America’s ethnic and cultural diversity by sharing the Japanese American experience. YPN provides opportunities for professional and personal development, community building, volunteering, fundraising, and public outreach and engagement.
