We offer opportunities for both public and private parties to reserve space on the grounds throughout the year. Our site includes many amenities such as electrical hookups, restrooms, a historic gazebo, picnic tables, and ample and accessible parking. Our mature trees provide a beautiful canopy of shade in the summer months. And don’t forget, the outstanding iris garden has a walkway for easier viewing and provides a delightful backdrop for wedding photos.

The Friends of the Historical Museum at Fort Missoula raise funds for educational programs and internships, exhibits and collections care, restoration projects and preservation of archaeological sites and historic buildings, and events for the enjoyment of our community.
- Sponsorship: Your business can support our community’s history. For more than four decades, The Historical Museum at Fort Missoula has been a leader in keeping Missoula County and Western Montana history alive through preservation, educational programs, community events, and exhibitions. We host over 60 events annually. Our four signature events are: Forestry Day at the Fort, Old-Fashioned 4th at the Fort Celebration, Fall Harvest Festival, & the Annual Used Book Sale. Sponsorship support is critical, allowing us to create community focused events, and seize new opportunities to explore our world and share its wonders with people of all ages.
- Legacy: Whether you would like to put your donation to work today or create benefits after your lifetime, you can find a charitable plan that lets you provide for your family and support your charitable goals. The Historical Museum at Fort Missoula works with Montana Community Foundation to assist you to create a lasting legacy for our community. If you would like to extend your charitable support to make a lasting impact, there are several gift arrangements to choose from:
- Bequests: The simplest form of planned gift and may be included in a new or revised will. Bequests may be designated to a specific project or program, or may be unrestricted. Before making a restricted bequest intention, please contact the Historical Museum at Fort Missoula to ensure your eventual wishes will be fulfilled. We will prepare a statement of intent that can be referenced in your estate documents.
- Charitable Gift Annuities: When you establish a charitable remainder trust, you make an irrevocable gift which is placed in the trust. When you fund a trust gift, you not only receive an income stream for the life of the trust, but you also qualify for an immediate income tax charitable deduction, avoid any capital gains tax on the transfer, and reduce your taxable estate.
- Retirement Plans: You may wish to designate HMFM as the beneficiary of all or part of your retirement plan assets and set aside other assets for family and friends. As a tax-exempt organization, the Museum will generally receive the full amount of the plan’s value.
- Life Insurance: You may name HMFM as a beneficiary of all or part of a new or existing life insurance policy. Depending on the type of policy donated, you may receive an immediate income tax deduction and be able to deduct any future premium payments on the policy.
- Real Estate with Retained Life Estate: A gift of a remainder interest in a farm or personal residence offers a charitable deduction, and avoidance of capital gains, while permitting the donor to use the property for the rest of his or her life. Although the donor will be responsible for maintenance, taxes, and insurance, the charitable deduction may be particularly helpful during years of high income and the gift removes the property from the estate thereby saving potential estate taxes.
- Object Donation: Interested in Donating an artifact to the museum? The Museum collects, preserves, and interprets artifacts related to the exploration, founding, and evolution of the City and County of Missoula, the development and evolution of Fort Missoula. The Museum collects, preserves, and interprets objects from the period of earliest exploration of the Missoula Valley to the present in order to present a coherent and total picture.
Volunteer & Internship: Volunteers are the backbone for our museum operations. We value and appreciate the time and energy that our awesome volunteers contribute to help make history happen here at the museum. Are you interested in joining our outstanding crew of support? Here are some of the fun ways you can help: Museum and front desk, Children’s programs, Adult programs, Special Events, Tours and Museum Interpretation, Curatorial Support ( working with artifacts), Assist with exhibit construction and installation, Photography, Social Media, Marketing.
