Founded in 2009 as an online resource, the Center evolved into a go-to leader in the field that provides learning opportunities to a worldwide community. Today, the Center is the only independent art law entity in the United States dedicated to writing, gathering, and sharing law and visual arts information for the benefit of artists, students, lawyers, academics, and many more.
WHAT WE DO: From its offices in DUMBO, Brooklyn, and Zürich, Switzerland, the Center offers research and education in the field of art law.
- Website: Our main outreach is through our website where we publish articles, provide insights, and aggregate art law resources, including law firms, educational courses, books, films, artists’ assistance, and bar associations. Our Case Law Corner provides summaries of recent and ongoing art law litigation. Since 2009, we have published over 1,000 articles and dozens of resource pages that have become a repository of information. Become a Member for full access to our resources.
- Newsletter: Our monthly electronic newsletter, the “Art Law Blast”, is an engaging rundown of upcoming events, legal cases, recent news, publications, exhibitions, and more. Subscribe now or read the archives.
- Events: The Center organizes virtual and in-person conferences, lectures, workshops, screenings, and studio tours. We work closely with law schools, student societies, law firms, arts organizations, and bar associations to plan events and to offer networking opportunities. Our Art & Law Auctions also provide exposure to artists in our community. Check our calendar for upcoming events.
PROGRAMS: Throughout the year, we work closely with * law schools * bar associations * law firms * galleries and * other nonprofits, and we participate in discussions about proposed legislation, such as the merits of instituting a federal resale royalty right in the United States and diversity in arts-related organizations.
- Internship and Fellowship Programs (since 2013): Interested in working in the art law field? Center for Art Law welcomes applications for internships and graduate fellowships at our offices in DUMBO-Brooklyn (NY), Zürich (CH) and/or online.
- Artist-Dealer Relationships Clinic (since 2022): The Clinic connects artists, dealers, and attorneys to forge meaningful relations and provide a platform for artists and dealers to learn about consignment agreements and have their questions on the topic addressed by experts in the field. In addition to one-on-one pro bono consultations, the Clinic will offer primers, workshops and webinars on the law governing artist-dealer relations and facilitate conversations between artists, dealers and attorneys on drafting and negotiating contracts and consignment agreements.
- Art & Law workshops for visual artists (since May 2019): A multitude of relevant workshops are offered each year.
- The Visual Artists’ Immigration Clinic (since 2020): The Visual Arts Immigration Clinic is designed to guide emerging visual artists through the process of obtaining a visa to the United States.
- Art Law Lunch Talks (since 2020): These sessions are numerous and informative.
- Artist Legacy and Estate Planning Clinic (since 2021): The Artist Legacy and Estate Planning Clinic connects artists, estate administrators, attorneys, tax advisors, and other experts to create meaningful and lasting solutions for expanding the art canon and art legacy planning.
- Art and Copyright Clinic (since Spring 2024): Helping artists protect their work and stay up to date on the increasingly complex copyright law landscape.
- Art Lawyering Bootcamp: Legacy & Estate Planning (since 2024).
