The George Peabody Library is widely recognized as one of the most beautiful library spaces in the world, but is also an essential space for teaching and research.provides a uniquely elegant and scholarly setting for * Weddings * Receptions * Meetings, and * Corporate events. Comprised of two distinct spaces, the Exhibit Gallery and the Reading Room, the Library offers a range of options for hosting events of varying formats.
- Reading Room: The George Peabody Library provides a truly breathtaking setting for weddings and celebrations of all kinds. Six tiers of stately cast-iron columns and ornate railings embellished with gold leaf encircle the Reading Room, creating an ambiance that is both enchanting and scholarly. Filled with over 300,000 volumes of books, the Library creates a stunning backdrop for ceremonies and receptions, and provides a timeless and storied setting for your personal memories.
- Exhibit Gallery: The adjoining Exhibit Gallery offers a distinctive environment for cocktails and hors d’oeuvres. The space also features rotating exhibitions throughout the year created by Johns Hopkins University curators. The Exhibit Gallery serves as a gathering space for guests before the ceremony and during the cocktail hour. It remains open throughout the evening for those who want a quiet moment with friends and family or a break from dancing in the Reading Room.
- Casual, amateur photography and filming are permitted for personal, non-commercial use with the following conditions:
- Hand-held cameras
- No flash, lights, tripods or professional camera equipment.
- Disruptive photography or filming is not allowed.
- All subjects, including library users and staff, must give consent.
- Portrait photographs and photography and filming intended for commercial use must be prearranged with and approved by Office of Private Events and may be subject to a fee.

Membership
The Friends of the Sheridan Libraries help provide resources for scholars and supported programming designed to engage, enlighten, and inspire the Hopkins and Baltimore communities.
Annual Giving Levels: Membership benefits are cumulative: Members are entitled to all the benefits of their specific group as well as those of all the groups below that giving level.

Friends Advisory Council
The Friends of the Libraries group is led by the Friends Advisory Council (FAC), whose members serve as advocates for the Sheridan Libraries by acquainting the community at large with the Libraries’ mission, resources, and needs. They raise philanthropic support for the advancement of the Libraries, including the * acquisition and * conservation of research collections * exhibition openings * book talks, an * online speaker series, and * other programming.

Your gift to the Sheridan Libraries benefits every Hopkins student and faculty member and helps advance research and teaching to better the world.
Annual Giving
- Donations at specified amounts are designated and you may customize tour gifts. Recurring and Matching gifts are encouraged. Memorial and Tribute gifts are welcomed. And you may designate a Fund. Your gift in support of our people, collections, and programs will benefit students and faculty today and for generations to come.
- Inclusive Collections Fund: Our Special Collections curators, librarians, and archivists are actively building and stewarding an important collection of rare and archival materials that document the experiences and histories of African American, LGBTQ+, immigrant, and other marginalized communities, with a special interest in groups that are local to Baltimore. Your gift will allow us to * acquire * process * preserve, and * digitize letters * manuscripts * periodicals * rare books * ephemera, and * other primary source materials that document these under-represented histories, and make them available to students and researchers worldwide.
- Curatorial Internships: The Department of Special Collections offer student opportunities to curate digital exhibitions that expand online access to our collections of * rare books * manuscripts * photographs * ephemera, and * institutional archives. Paired with a mentor for support and consultation, each intern is introduced to other work across the department and learns about how special collection libraries and major research libraries are organized and function.
- Digital Course Materials: We continue to meet the heightened demand for digital materials by accelerating our digitization activities and working with faculty to acquire new digital scholarly content. Your gift will support many unanticipated expenses and help us connect Hopkins faculty and students with the digital resources they need for effective online teaching, learning, and research.
Matching Gifts

Endowment Giving
- Current-use gifts are used immediately. Endowed gifts are assets that are invested in perpetuity, providing the Sheridan Libraries with ongoing operating income for future generations. Endowed funds earn income, such as * dividends * interest, and * capital appreciation, and each year a percentage of that annual income goes to support a specific purpose determined by you, the donor.
- The standard minimum level to establish a named fund is $100,000. There are also minimum levels for funding specific positions and other naming opportunities.

Planned Giving
- Create your legacy at Johns Hopkins with a planned gift to the Sheridan Libraries that gives back. Choose the gift that’s right for you. A life income gift, such as a charitable gift annuity or charitable trust, provides future support for our Blue Jays while also providing a tax deduction and payments to you or your loved ones. Gifts of * appreciated stocks * mutual funds, or * real estate held for more than one year may provide special tax advantages. Gifts of Materials
- The Sheridan Libraries welcome gifts of * Books * Audio-visual media * Archival material * Personal papers, and * Manuscripts, * Photographs * Architectural drawings * Artifacts, and a * Diverse variety of other items in many formats that align with our collection philosophy and support the instructional and research programs of the university. Many of the University Libraries’ most treasured, rare and valuable resources were donated by alumni and friends and have served as the foundation of some of our major circulating and special collections. In other instances these gifts have significantly enhanced existing purchased holdings and already established collections. We do ask for philanthropic donations to accompany donated materials to assist our curators in maximizing a collection’s potential as an academic resource that we will preserve, promote and treasure for future generations of Blue Jays and the worldwide research community. Adopt A Book: Strengthen our Collection
- Your gift will provide immediate support for the acquisition of rare materials. Showcasing some of the most interesting, beautiful, and rare items recently purchased to support Hopkins research and teaching, our Adopt a Book program allows you to adopt selected items byunderwriting their costs. Your adoption helps library staff acquire more research collections, preserve treasures for future generations, and make rare materials available around the world through digitization. Items may be adopted as a unique gift to commemorate an occasion, celebrate a milestone, or honor an achievement. In addition to a tax deduction, you will receive recognition in the online library catalog. Be sure to check back often to see new selections available for adoption.
