Donation
Give to the Annual Fund: By contributing to the BMI, you are preserving the objects, photographs, and stories of the people who built Baltimore and those who are shaping its future. Four decades ago, Baltimore’s identity as a manufacturing center was being threatened. As factories closed and machines were being cast aside, our beloved city faced an uncertain future. In response to those challenges, people just like YOU created the BMI to help save the city’s unique heritage. Now, as we face another period of uncertainty, the BMI needs YOUR help to continue protecting Baltimore’s industrial past.
- Donations in any amount are appreciated. Recurring gifts are encouraged. Memorial and Tribute gifts are welcomed.
- Collection Fund: Support the BMI’s amazing collection, making it possible for the stories of these businesses and workers to live on. The BMI’s collections highlight the contributions of American innovators, past and present, whose enterprises have transformed our society. Often the only surviving remnants of once thriving industries that no longer exist, these objects need constant care and maintenance so that they can continue to inspire and educate audiences.
- Outreach Education Fund: Help students access the fun and hands-on learning of a traditional BMI Field trip from home. Your gift funds the development of interactive, digital field trips and BMI’s City Kits—activity boxes with all the materials kids need to engage in a remote learning about our city’s industrial history, and the hard working people who are a part of that story.
- Legacy Gifts: Deepen the impact of your gift. By including a bequest provision to the BMI in your will, you can help ensure that we can continue to educate audiences about Maryland’s industrial heritage for years to come.
- Planned Giving: Make a Lasting Gift. Increase the impact of your gift through planned giving by joining the BMI’s Legacy Society. With your help, the BMI can continue to shine a light on the human stories behind work and innovation. Together, we can remind people that ALL work matters as we inspire the next generation of innovators. Whether a gift through your will or retirement plan, a planned gift is one of the most meaningful ways for you to ensure that your personal, financial, and philanthropic goals are fulfilled, while having a substantial impact on the BMI.
- Legacy Society: Please let us know if you have included the museum in your estate plan so we can thank you for your generosity and welcome you to the Legacy Society.
- IRA Charitable Roll over: One of the easiest ways to sustain the museum’s future is by including the Baltimore Museum of Industry as a beneficiary of your retirement plans. You can name the BMI as a sole beneficiary, co-beneficiary, or contingent beneficiary of your IRA, 401(k), or other tax-deferred retirement plan. To do so, request a beneficiary designation form from your retirement plan administrator. If you are 70 ½ or older, you can support the BMI’s mission through an IRA charitable rollover and avoid paying taxes on transfers of up to $100,000. Your gift from your IRA to the BMI is not subject to the deduction limits on charitable gifts. And if you are 72 or older, you can also satisfy your minimum distribution through this transfer. Donations from a 401K are still taxed as a withdrawal, but you can roll over a portion of your 401K into an IRA and donate it tax-free from the IRA to the BMI via ACH or check from the IRA Administrator. This way your donation will count as part of your annual Required Minimum Distribution, but NOT as part of your annual adjusted income.
- Gifts of Stocks or Securities: The BMI is pleased to accept gifts of publicly traded securities as donations. You can claim a charitable deduction for the full market value of the securities on the date that the gift is made, while paying no capital gains tax on its appreciation. The museum benefits by receiving the full value of the gift.Instructions: Donors may make a gift of stock by advising their financial representative to contact the firm below with the instructions for the transfer. Donors making stock gifts receive a tax deduction based on the mean value on the date of transfer to the BMI.
- Corporate Partners: Corporate partners help to preserve the region’s industrial heritage, and invest in programs that inspire the inventors and innovators of tomorrow. The BMI celebrates the stories of work and workers with empathy, honesty, and authenticity, inspiring pride in our industrial past and hope for our future. We are proud to partner with an extraordinary group of corporate partners who value and support the museum’s mission. We work with our corporate supporters to tailor giving opportunities that meet specific philanthropic goals and provide a variety of benefits. - Artifacts: Thank you for your interest in the BMI and for considering the museum as a repository for your possessions. Artifacts may be accepted for the Permanent Collection, Research Center, and the Teaching Collection. The permanent collection is controlled by museum staff and requires special considerations and permissions for use. This helps ensure that your gift will be preserved as long as possible. The Teaching Collection is actively used for hands-on programming and discarded when worn out.
- Volunteer: Volunteer opportunities abound at the Baltimore Museum of Industry for people looking to get involved
