Donation

The Museum must continue to rely on external sources to fund its programmatic needs and we remain focused on securing these resources through a combination of endowment and expendable funds. Memorial and tribute gifts are also encouraged. Ways to support the Museum include:

  • Museum Annual Fund: The Princeton University Art Museum is grateful to the many donors who support our mission to educate, inspire, and challenge the public through exposure to the world of art. We rely on the generosity of many individuals, and we welcome gifts at all levels.
  • Gift of Stock / Donor-advised Funds / Matching Gifts / Qualified Charitable Distribution from an Individual Retirement Account (IRA) are all ways to provide your support.
  • Gifts of Art: Since the Museum’s founding in 1882, its globe-spanning collections, which comprise more than 117,000 works of art from ancient to contemporary, have been assembled largely through the generosity of donors—both alumni and friends. Many donors make a gift of art to enhance the Museum’s collections and to support its mission as a teaching and research institution for future generations to have transformative experiences with art. The Museum welcomes gifts of art that are compatible with its collecting areas and the Museum’s commitment to excellence.
  • Target Your Contribution: Many donors are committed to advancing specific areas of the Princeton University Art Museum’s mission, including exhibitions and installations, art conservation, K–12 education, and community engagement. If you have a particular area of interest, our team will work with you to ensure your contribution is directed to where it will have the greatest impact. Targeted support may also be structured through bequests, trusts, and other planned giving arrangements.
  • Museum Travel Program: Join Museum curators and leadership staff at some of the world’s foremost cultural destinations. These remarkable itineraries offer exclusive access with experts and include unique opportunities to view private collections, visit artist studios, and go behind the scenes at major museums. The travel groups are kept small, with hosts dedicated to the art of fine service, to promote a positive trip experience for all travelers. The Museum Travel Program is limited to benefactors and members at the Insider level and above.
  • Museum Gala: The Museum Gala plays a vital role in advancing this mission by raising essential funds. Sponsorship Opportunities are offered at five levels. Earnings support our curatorial and educational programming, always free of charge for all visitors. Your support helps us present major exhibitions in our new galleries; conserve significant works of art; collaborate with educators to develop needs-based learning modules for K–12 students; and sustain robust public programming, both in-person and online.

Volunteer Opportunities: Get involved!

Museum Docents: Founded in 1967 to provide educational experiences for the broader Princeton community, the Princeton University Art Museum Docent Association is an integral part of the Museum’s educational initiatives. Docent responsibilities include:

  • Conduct tours for children and adults as well as give weekend Highlights Tours
  • Attend weekly meetings, which provide continuing education and serve as a forum for dialogue
  • Help run many of our family, K–12, and adult programs

All Museum Docents are required to have an active Museum membership status at any level. There are many benefits to being a part of our member family, such as invitations to special events, members-only communications, and reciprocal access to museums around the country. Membership contributions provide critical funding for the Museum’s exhibitions, public programming, and educational initiatives, and your commitment to and support of the Museum is essential to your role as a Docent. If becoming a member is a financial concern, a limited number of complimentary memberships are available!

Student Advisory Board: The Student Advisory Board (SAB) is a group of Princeton University students dedicated to creating inclusive and welcoming experiences for the undergraduate student community and fostering lively participation in the larger Princeton arts community. Board members create student events inspired by artwork in the Museum’s collections and exhibitions. They collaborate with other student groups to incorporate diverse student voices in their programming. The board is committed to facilitating ongoing dialogue about equity, anti-racism, access, and inclusion in their work. Popular events include art-making programs, artist talks, alumni networking, and the Student Gala.
