Volunteer: Join Our Team. As the national memorial to the Space Shuttle Columbia, the Columbia Memorial Space Center is dedicated to preserving the history of Downey’s aerospace program through our interactive exhibits and programming. Today, more than 40 active volunteers help to maintain daily operation of the Space Center by leading robotics classes, guiding school tours, supporting our various STEM programs, and planning special events like Rocket Fever, Family Nights, and the City of STEM Science Festival! Each volunteer brings unique skills and talent to the Space Center. Volunteers learn while working alongside staff and other volunteers. As a volunteer, you have the opportunity to work with the community and form friendships with like-minded people.
Docent Program: DO YOU LOVE STEM? ARE YOU LOOKING FOR A REWARDING VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY?
Through our field trip program, docents connect with diverse audiences while inspiring creative thinking and shaping memorable experiences focused around science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM)! A field trip to the Space Center offers guests a positive learning experience with hands-on activities and interactive exhibits. During a two-hour guided tour, docents encourage informative discussions while interpreting exhibits, lead a session in our Robotics Lab, and engage groups in a focused activity. Docents work side by side with Space Center staff where they learn to develop strategies for communicating STEM subjects to audiences of all ages and backgrounds. If you love learning, have an expressive voice, and love sharing what you know with others, this may be the volunteer program for you!
STEM Internship: College students are invited to apply for our new STEM Intern position! STEM Internships are offered every Spring and Fall semester (16 weeks).
